As the days roll by, the sleeves of every girl grow longer. We stock up on essentials like booties, sweaters, and our favorite fall jacket, but what about the flannels? It’s upsetting to me that flannels are starting to become a thing of the past, especially when they can be so easy to style. Not to mention, they are the most comfortable pieces of clothing ever. So, here is where I am reintroducing them to you, so you can see all the ways that they can be styled. Don’t give up on the flannel! Well, yet, at least.
- The basic way — Just with a pair of jeans or leggings and boots. You can keep it buttoned up or unbuttoned with a tank top underneath. Add your jacket, accessories, etc. as you please. (Just don’t overkill with the necklaces)
- Knot tie — This really works with a flannel that is one size bigger than what you normally wear. Button the flannel down to the bottom, leaving the last and/or second to last button undone. Then, tie a knot with the ends of the flannel. MAKE SURE to bring the knot to either side of your body and DO NOT keep the knot laying over your belly button (we’re not in the wild west, save that for Halloween). Wear with high waisted pants and combat boots.
- Around the waist — This is still a trend and I’m not exactly sure how I feel about it. I have worn my flannels around my waist a handful of times, but I think it takes a specific type of style to pull it off. Simply pair if with a plain white tee, boyfriend jeans, and ankle booties. Maybe add a simple gold necklace and throw a leather jacket over your shoulders to give it a biker edge.

- With a three quarter zip or zip up flannel on top — This is very Ralph Lauren, American classic, and preppy. It is very convenient when it becomes colder and also is very stylish. Just button up the flannel, leaving the top unbuttoned. Throw the three quarter zip or cardigan zip up on top, fold down both of the collars, leaving the flannel collar to be layered neatly on top, and fold the sleeves, revealing the flannel. Pair with light or dark wash skinnies, depending upon the colors of the flannel and the zip up, and flat heel booties.
- With a v-neck sweater — This is seen also as preppy, but depending on what color sweater you wear, you can change the look. For example, if you wear a red flannel with a black sweater, you can still achieve an edgier look, but the two pieces together are usually seen as preppy. Get where I’m going? Good. I would usually say pair this with leggings or black jeans, but you can also wear a high waisted or a midi skirt with this. If wearing the skirt, just wear tights and no high knee socks. The socks will make the look go overboard and you do not want that. Add a long necklace for layering.

- With a belt — This counts for a longer flannel, however. Steal one from your brother or dads closet and make sure in length, it goes past your hips (any length longer than that is fine). Depending on where you normally wear your belt is where you can fasten it. I like this look because it’s very easy, but has the mighty touch of femininity. Pair this with leggings, ankle booties, a thick infinity scarf, and a beanie (optional). However, depending on your height, if the flannel is long enough, you can get away with wearing it as a dress. Either way, you can work with it depending upon preference.

- With a vest — This usually does not apply to a fur vest, but more of the quilted, denim, etc. Wear the flannel buttoned, but the vest unzipped or unbuttoned. Depending on how cold it is or if it matches, throw on a scarf. Pair with leggings, knee high socks and knee high boots. Roll up the sleeves once or twice and add your watch and a few bangles.

- With a poncho — Yes, I said it. But, the poncho has to be a plain color. So, if you’re wearing a navy blue flannel, wear a biege, black, or gray poncho on top. Try to cuff the sleeves so you can add accessories. Also pair if with an infinity scarf. This look can call for any type of pant, as long as it’s skinny. The boxiness of the poncho would not work well with boyfriends, bell bottoms, or anything of the like.
