A few things I’ve learned at Fashion School… (FIT)

Hi guys! So I just wanted to share with you all several things that I’ve realized about FIT. From the dorms, to classes, to the food. This is all honest and opinion based, with a little humor and sarcasm mixed in.

Hopefully those of you that are thinking of applying will get a little insight as well!

  1. ) You don’t need to be dressed in heels and designer clothing everyday. Yes, you heard me. You think, “well, it’s fashion school. Doesn’t everyone wear heels?” NO.  People rarely wear heels unless they are running from their classes to their jobs/internships, vice versa. Half the time people are wearing Nike’s and slip-ons.
  2. ) There’s not one reason to feel intimidated. Every student has their own agenda, mind set, plans, etc. Not everyone wants to do the same exact thing as you. The only thing that you know you have in common with your peers is that you’re attending the same school. Don’t worry about what anyone is doing but yourself.
  3. ) Do not…and I repeat…DO NOT use the emergency exits in the buildings unless there is a real emergency. They scare the shit out of me and draw attention to yourself.
  4. ) Take advantage of your resources. FIT isn’t free, but the contacts, opportunities, and clubs are. Network, get involved, and be social. Join a club, volunteer for Fashion Week, and introduce yourself to your classmates. That’s the only way to get your name out and for people to remember you!
  5. ) Don’t miss out! FIT is pretty much the most prestigious fashion school in the world and it’s in the heart of NYC. There’s so much to do, see, and explore. There’s always events, pop up shops, and things happening all around you. Don’t waste your time sleeping in all day or lounging around.
  6. ) Be careful when you go out (parties, clubs, etc.). Always go in a group and leave as a group: no exceptions. Enough said.
  7. ) If you live on campus and have a problem with a roommate or a floor mate (if they’re being noisy, inconsiderate, etc.), do not try to solve it yourself. Talk to your RA first and see what he or she recommends you do. Take it from me.
  8. ) Do not waste your money on a meal plan. The tour guides lied to you — the food sucks. Unless you live in a double where you’d have no choice (sorry). That being said, your best bet would be a quad in Alumni if you’re an undergrad or transfer student.
  9. ) Wait a couple of weeks to buy your textbooks and supplies. Your professors will always tell you no matter what that the textbook is mandatory, you need the textbook to pass, if you don’t buy the textbook you’ll die. FALSE. Unless your professor literally makes you read the chapters and will pop quiz you or ask you on the spot questions in class about the chapters (it happens), then don’t buy it. Most of the time you will have PowerPoints explaining everything and that’s all you need.
  10. ) Don’t stress/panic/freak. Worry about yourself (see 1-9). Buy a planner, a dry erase board, and use reminders in your phone to organize yourself. Get enough sleep, eat healthy, make friends, and most of all: have fun!
