What to wear to your internship.

As time flies through this semester, so do outfits in your closet. But, what happens when you run out of outfits for your corporate internship? As long as you follow this step-by-step guide, you’ll become best dressed in the office (and as an intern, that’s an accomplishment)!

This post will contain not only completely styled outfits, but also individual items like basics that will be used as foundation, statement pieces that are not necessarily mandatory but would add a lot of personality to outfits, and accessories to top everything off.

So, first, let’s start with basics. You’ll need:

  1. A black blazer
  2. Black slacks
  3. A white and black blouse — the sleeve length depends on the corporate dress code, but I would use t-shirt length to be safe.
  4. 2 black and 2 white tank tops or camisoles
  5. Alternate pair of slacks — can be any color, but I would recommend purchasing a neutral or a very dark color before a bright one.
  6. A knee length skirt
  7. A pair of black flats
  8. A pair of black kitten heels

Next, let’s move onto statement clothing (like I said, these aren’t mandatory, but chances are you might have a couple of pieces that I will list already!):

  1. A blazer of any different color — maybe white, tan, hunter green, or navy!
  2. A pair of slacks of any different color — go with oxblood, khaki, dark purple, or dark green.
  3. A patterned blouse — the more, the merrier. Try horizontal stripes, polka-dots, chevron, or a two-toned color.
  4. A dress of any kind –a skater dress, (but make the the length is appropriate, these tend to be very short) a long body-con dress with the length reaching mid-calf, and/or a loose-fitting t-shirt dress with the length reaching the knees.
  5. A sleeveless blazer — these are very good all year around. In the summer time when it’s way too hot to wear a blazer, just throw the blazer on top of the blouse I mentioned in the basics section! This will be extremely comfortable for you and also keep you looking very professional. Also, in the winter they are great for layering. So, layer the blazer on top of a long sleeve blouse or top. This look is very fashion forward!
  6. A cardigan — Usually I find that Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, or Zara are great places to find cardigans that look corporate friendly. Try to find one with a little more structure (lean toward Ralph in this case), but if not, then find a simple cardigan that will reach your hips. However, if you would like a longer cardigan and are wearing a dress, simply wrap a thin belt around the top of the cardigan to top the look. I find that when the cardigan is unbuttoned, the added belt looks better because it also shows off what you are wearing underneath! This will add a touch of femininity to your outfit just from a simple cardigan.

Lastly before I move into fully styled outfits, here are some accessories that you should add to your outfits:

  1. A statement necklace — yes, I said statement. But no, I do not mean a tacky necklace from Forever21. Find a piece that is bold and completes your outfit, instead of a piece that makes the focus only on the necklace.
  2. Stackable bracelets — I prefer Alex & Ani because they are simple, cute, and in trend. But you can’t go wrong with a couple simple bangles, or one really fun bracelet with either embroidery, stones, or bling (like I said, not tacky).
  3. A scarf — infinity scarves are great because you don’t have to constantly readjust, but regular scarves are more versatile, so you can choose what you like most. I would go with one solid color, but if you have one of those already, then go for one with a simple pattern.
  4. Loafers or oxfords — either shoe adds a lot of life to any outfit. It can turn a boring “plain white tee and blue jeans” outfit  to a cute and casual look. So, imagine the potential for any outfit you can wear to work!
  5. A watch — I prefer my watches with a big face, but some would like one with a face that’s somewhat smaller. It all depends on preference, but this watch can easily add to your stackable bracelets and can match with your statement necklace!

So, with the items I’ve listed and maybe some extra pieces, I will style outfits for a full work week (Mon-Fri) to illustrate how to put these pieces together. These outfits will be for the current season.
